Game modes

Six ways to play Sudoku

Competitive modes need a connection and a second player. Classic Journey and the daily puzzle work on their own, offline, whenever you want a quiet board.

  • Two Sudoku tiles showing 3 and 9 clashing with a lightning bolt, the Action Sudoku 1v1 mode icon

    Action Sudoku (1v1)

Real-time 1v1 multiplayer Sudoku. You and your opponent race the same board — every cell you solve first is a cell they can't score. Matches run 3 to 10 minutes.

  • Isometric Sudoku board of stacked blue and purple tiles, the Classic Journey mode icon

    Classic Journey

A single-player Sudoku level map you can play at your own pace, online or off. Track personal bests per level and compare them against the global best time.

  • Two interlocking puzzle tiles, the Co-op Sudoku mode icon

    Co-op Sudoku

Solve one shared board together with a friend. Mistakes are shared too, so co-op rewards talking through deductions instead of racing.

How it works

How a multiplayer Sudoku match works

The rules of Sudoku do not change — every row, column and 3×3 box still holds the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. What changes is that someone else is solving the same grid at the same time.

  1. 01

    Pick a mode and difficulty

Choose 1v1, ranked, co-op or a bot match, then set difficulty and match length. Matchmaking pairs you with someone in a few seconds.

  2. 02

    Race the same board

Both players get an identical Sudoku grid. Every correct digit scores, and finishing a row, column or 3×3 block pays a completion bonus.

  3. 03

    Three mistakes and you're out

A wrong digit costs you a life. Lose all three and the match ends, so pushing for speed always trades against certainty.

  4. 04

    Bank the rewards

Wins pay rating, XP and coins. Coins buy profile titles, animated frames and board themes — cosmetics only, never solving power.

Playable in your browser

Play a free Sudoku puzzle right here

A full 9×9 Sudoku, free and with no download or account. Pick easy, medium, hard or expert — every board is generated fresh with exactly one solution, so it is always solvable by logic alone, never by guessing.

Tap a cell and choose a digit, or use your keyboard: arrow keys to move, 1–9 to fill, N for pencil marks. Mistakes are counted against the three-life rule a real 1v1 match runs on, but they will not end your puzzle here.

What's in the game

Built for people who already like Sudoku

  • Sub-5-second matchmaking

Queue into a live 1v1 Sudoku match against a real opponent, usually in under five seconds. Play with friends directly from your friends list.

  • Three-mistake limit

Guessing has a price. The three-life rule is what turns Sudoku from a solitary puzzle into a game with real risk management.

  • Daily puzzle and streaks

A new Sudoku puzzle every day with a calendar you can browse backwards, plus streak tracking and daily quests to keep you sharp.

  • Board themes and cosmetics

Unlock board skins, animated avatar frames and profile titles. Everything cosmetic is earnable with coins from normal play.

  • Plays offline

Classic Journey and the daily puzzle work without a connection, so the game is still useful on a plane or underground.

  • No pay-to-win

No hint packs that decide matches, no purchased advantage. Everything that affects a result is earned at the board.

Free, no account

Everything else here is free too

Boards at every difficulty, a solver for when one has beaten you, printable sheets, and the techniques that get a stalled grid moving again. None of it needs the app.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Action Sudoku free to play?

Yes. Action Sudoku is free to download and play on iOS and Android. Every game mode — 1v1 multiplayer, ranked, co-op, the daily challenge and Classic Journey — is available at no cost. Optional purchases are cosmetic only.

How does multiplayer Sudoku work?

Both players are given the same Sudoku board at the same time. You each solve it on your own device and score points for every correct digit, with bonuses for completing a row, column or 3×3 block. The higher score when the timer ends wins the match.

Can I play Sudoku online with friends?

Yes. Add friends in the social hub and invite them directly into a 1v1 match or a co-op board. You can also queue into public matchmaking to be paired with a random opponent of a similar rating.

What happens if I make a mistake?

Each player has three lives. Entering a digit that does not belong in a cell costs one life, and losing all three ends your match. Because of this, playing quickly always carries risk against playing accurately.

Can I play Sudoku offline?

Yes. Classic Journey levels and the daily Sudoku challenge are playable without an internet connection. The live modes — 1v1, ranked and co-op — need a connection because they run against another player in real time.

Is Action Sudoku good for brain training?

Sudoku is a logic and pattern-recognition exercise, and the timed match format adds working memory and decision-making under pressure. Action Sudoku tracks your solve times, accuracy and streaks so you can see how your speed changes over time. It is a game, not a medical or cognitive-therapy product.

What difficulty levels are available?

Puzzles run from easy through to expert. In live modes you pick the difficulty before the match starts, and both players get a board of the same difficulty so the race stays fair.

Which devices does Action Sudoku run on?

Action Sudoku is available on iPhone and iPad through the App Store, and on Android phones and tablets through Google Play.
